Ánima é un proxecto visual que propón unha analogía entre a tradición do sacrificio do porco e o seu paralelismo coa crenza mitolóxica da “Santa Compaña”. A través deste traballo, Ruth Montiel Arias (Palmeira, A Coruña. 1977) propón un encontro entre a superstición e o costumismo galego para trazar un novo imaxinario onde sexa posible unha nova relación do folclore cun humanismo non antropocéntrico.
Baixo o pretexto da tradición, mantiveronse actos que hoxe resultan totalmente inxustificables, aínda que, dependendo do país ou rexión na que nos atopemos; algúns mantéñense con diferentes pátinas temporais adaptadas por unha certa modernidade ou avance, como é posible constatar en Galicia.
Ánima pon así o foco na tradición e en como esta xustifica actos cuestionables, non só por unha ampla maioría da sociedade, senón por algunhas das persoas involucradas que non se resignan a manter xa o mandato secular da sacrificio.
Ánima encerra no seu mesmo relato unha vocación transformadora e utópica: en sí mesma esta serie de fotografías acontece no paso da opacidade da noite á luz do día, do silencio ao berro, do máxico ao real, do invisible ao visible, do executor ao executado. Ánima is a visual project that proposes an analogy between the tradition of pig slaughter and its parallelism with the mythological belief in the ‘Santa Compaña’ (Holy Company). Through this work, Ruth Montiel Arias (Palmeira, A Coruña, 1977) suggests a meeting point between superstition and Galician customs to create a new imagery where a new relationship between folklore and a non-anthropocentric humanism is possible.
Under the pretext of tradition, certain acts have been preserved that are now considered entirely unjustifiable, although depending on the country or region we find ourselves in, some continue with different temporal veneers adapted by a certain modernity or progress, as can be observed in Galicia.
Ánima thus focuses on tradition and how it legitimizes questionable acts, not only by a large majority of society but also by some of the people involved who refuse to uphold the age-old mandate of slaughter.
Ánima encapsulates within its narrative a transformative and utopian vocation: this series of photographs itself unfolds from the opacity of the night to the light of day, from silence to outcry, from the magical to the real, from the invisible to the visible, from the executor to the executed. A visual and emotional journey that shapes this new photobook by Ruth Montiel Arias, oscillating between tradition and beliefs where the most primal instincts of human nature emerge, to the possibility of another symbolic and moral legacy; thus, leaving no one indifferent who delves into its pages.
