As one of the key figures in the young, vivid scene around the Forlaget Kornmod imprint, Jonas has released a good deal of music under different names during the last few years, often in very limited cassette editions with barely no distribution. In many ways, Franciska pretty much captures the very essence of the sound world their label now is associated with: melancholic and rather loose tape compositions made with a hands-on approach, usually performed on organ, piano, synthesizers and acoustic instruments and often room recorded with environmental sounds leaking in. Truly DIY ambient music, closely connected in spirit with some of the more melodic Förlag För Fri Musik moments, Astrid Øster Mortensen etc. With crude stop/rec editing, sizzling magnetism and tape scuffs left intact, the A-side consists mainly of piano recordings made while on break from classical music rehearsals in school, while the B-side incorporates more electronics and field recordings though still having the piano as the focal point. Wintery minimalism at its very best. Cover image by Alba Liv. Mastered by Joakim Karlsson. All tracks are released in chronological order – in other words, the order in which they were recorded. Sten used a personal, unique combination of obsolete digital audio processors and sound generators, combined with his own secret-sauce tuning system. There's no respite, but on the the whole it's a very functional arrangement between the three of them. Each song is belted out with a short, sharp fit, with some synthesisers occasionally glistening out at the edges. Following her debut album (Éclipse Des Ocelles) for Morc with a split EP and a limited cassette for Wabi-Sabi, Roxane now turns to Marionette with her intimate narrative based multi-instrumental recordings, a match made in the heavens if you ask us. Coming from a background of studying narration and different animation mediums, it’s no surprise that her recordings evoke vivid imagery and carry a trace of the environment they were conceived in. The instruments morph as extensions of her body and ultimately become new organs, a means of communicating these bio-memetic stories and creating a dialogue between herself and her surroundings. Whether it's active research or taking her instruments to the forest, Métayer opens up her imagination by taking this mental journey to discover locations, creatures, and time periods then channeling that into her own fairy tales. Jones himself can no longer be asked, and as we continue to investigate the swathes of material he provided, you hit sources like the DAT or DATs that make up the contents of the new double LP Turn On Arab American Radio. Nine tracks, the first LP/four tracks titled “Turn On Arab American Radio,” and the other LP/five tracks labelled only “Arab American Radio.” None of them sound particularly radio-esque, although given the simultaneous vastness and ornate focus of Jones’ Muslimgauze work that gap between name and sound is far from atypical.

Instead here the de rigeur percussion loops that underpin this particular set of tracks, while occasionally clipping into the fierce distortion that Jones either loved to use or couldn’t get away from, steer away from both the more consistent application of that distortion as well as the Middle Eastern and Asian influences he often used. It’d be a stretch to call anything here basic boom-bap production but they come closer to it than a lot of Muslimgauze production. And while those loops are, as always prominent, they’re not actually the focus; settling into steady vamps as structures for Jones to pursue an extended and often more gentle exploration of the other sample sources he has here. There are stringed instruments, the sound of water, but most prominently or strikingly the human voice. Nothing is in English but tone and the occasional word (“familia”, “passport”) still provide guides. There are ululations, snatches of melody; but most often speech, dialogue, often tense and harried sounding. Is this what Jones was thinking of or referring to with his “Arab American Radio”?

As with so many other questions about Muslimgauze, we’ll never know the answer to that one. (Most pertinently in this case we might wonder who appears here, and what the context of these recordings is. But Jones never provided that with his submissions.) Here, even though those inexorable loops pound on, indefatigable, that emphasis on some of the people Jones chooses lends a measured gentleness to much of Turn On Arab American Radio, at least within the context of his body of work. The last thing you hear at the end of the second LP is one last question from one of the many speakers on this peculiar Muslimgauze radio, echoed away into infinity. We may never have answers, but those questions continue to resonate.

&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="https://muslimgauze.bandcamp.com/album/turn-on-arabic-american-radio"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Turn On Arabic American Radio by Muslimgauze&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0538/4486/9300/products/muslimgauze-turn-on-arabic-american-radio-323830.jpg?v=1676950909
sote-majestic-noise-made-in-beautiful-rotten-iran
Sote - Majestic Noise Made In Beautiful Rotten Iran

Sub Rosa / Belgium / 2023 / LP, Green

With this album, Sote conjures magnificent new sound worlds with the power to fascinate and intrigue (The Wire).

'Majestic Noise Made in Beautiful Rotten Iran' is an all electronic affair, harmonically maximalist, predominantly symphonic-synthetic, requiring active listening.
The making of this album was intentionally a very personal process, going into self therapy territory at times, interpreting the composer's contemplating mind dealing with tolerance, destruction, compassion, misery, grace and tyranny in an auditory manner.
Some pieces function as challengers of musical structural habits, provoking the short attention span culture, others present a problem-solution scenario, collectively via a neoteric noise aesthetic and detailed melodic weaving.
Ultimately, the objective was to engineer an assortment of works, awash with euphonic sound vivid in its essence, with a deep focus on various synthesis techniques within a compositional framework.

Dedicated to Peter Rehberg aka Pita.

Ata 'Sote' Ebtekar composes music with a deeply-held conviction that rules and formulas should be deconstructed and rethought. When Rob Smit of Kubus Kassettes first visited Enno to discuss the possibilities of releasing a cassette, he was open to the idea and gave Smit access to his tape archive of recorded tracks to cherry pick his favorite pieces. Both traffic in subtle shades of contemplative electronics, marked by patience, space, and poetic restraint. And both have rich histories of curation and collaboration – Edren in the duo Spirit & Form alongside Bent Von Bent, and Takahashi as proprietor of the Kankyō record shop, as well as one fourth of cosmic ambient quartet UNKNOWN ME. Mutual fans of one another’s work, they began sharing stems in the latter half of 2020, which slowly blossomed into a collection of multi-hued compositions inspired by notions of connectivity and impermanence, translated for east and west: Flow | 流れ.

Opener “Dusk Decorum | 黄昏 礼節” maps the mood of what’s to come, elegantly pirouetting and percolating through an expanding vista of looming stars and half-light horizons. Takahashi describes Edren’s arrangements as evoking “a strange feel, something we haven't heard much of before.” The sensation is one of “in-betweenness,” a restless current whispering beneath the beauty, like seasons seen in time-lapse footage: flickering but infinite, transience turned permanent. Takahashi’s signature sculpture garden tones plot spiral patterns over which Edren cascades dazzling pointillist synthesizer coloration. The pieces veer between delicate and dilated, micro and macro, their aperture forever softly in flux.

From the oscillating orchestral lullaby of “Stalactime | 鍾乳石時計” to the sweeping, sparkling dream sequence closer, “Shift Register | シフトレジスタ,” the album achieves the elusive goal of being more than the sum of its parts. This is music of rare air, elevated and amorphous, shimmering just out of reach. Though Edren and Takahashi have yet to cohabitate the same room in person (a fact that should be rectified soon by an astute festival booker), their palettes and poise are perfectly paired, twin fragilities woven into seven radiant and regenerative vibrational states. The cover design of a beatific, beaded leaf rippling on the surface of a hidden pond aptly captures the record’s muted majesty. Takahashi’s quiet pride is justified: “We are very happy with this time-consuming and carefully crafted work.”

Flow | 流れ by David Edren & H.Takahashi
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0538/4486/9300/products/david-edren-h-takahashi-flow-949061.jpg?v=1677569101
enhet-for-fri-musik-inom-dig-inom-mig
Enhet För Fri Musik - Inom Dig, Inom Mig

Aguirre Records / Belgium / RE 2023

Folk unit originated in the Swedish underground Enhet för Fri Musik -- featuring members of Sewer Election, Ättestupa, Neutral, Makthaverskan, and Blod - continually re-inventing what music is about through free improvisation and lengthy folk meanderings.

Embedded in the ever exciting Swedish underground scene Enhet För Fri Musik continues the quest for innovation numerous legendary Swedish bands started during the 70s, Pärson Sound, Trad Gras Och Stenar, Arbete Och Fritid. Tapping into that city’s inspiring independent pop scene, looking for like-minded souls, Berry and Cummings were joined by Scooter, a.k.a. R. Scott Kelly (Veronica Lake, Belmondo, Sabine, etc.), and Trish Roy (Belmondo, Heartworms).

The Shapiros may only have existed for a few weeks, during August 1994, but during that brief window of opportunity, the quartet recorded twelve gorgeous pop songs – nine originals, each a model of concision and restraint, and three covers, which gift the listener some of the coordinates to the group’s sound, a meeting point of C86 and the Brill Building Sound: lovely versions of Beat Happening’s “Cry For A Shadow”, 14 Iced Bears’ “Cut”, and The Shirelles’ “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”.

The material was recorded over three days at Mulberry Lane, the basement studio of Archie Moore – who, at the time of the sessions, was busy as one-fifth of Velocity Girl – and released via time-honoured formats for independent pop: two seven-inch singles, one split single with another Cummings project (Pencil Tin), and a few stray compilation appearances. The band in many ways was driven by Berry, who organised the release of The Shapiros’ first two singles, through the Fantastic and Popfactory labels. This is unsurprising: as co-founder of the long-lasting Chickfactor fanzine, Berry was a significant and supportive presence in independent music in the USA.

The songs on The Shapiros are perfectly formed; they’ve no need to say any more than what’s necessary, and this elegance of form lends them a timelessness that, for some, might seem outsize to the brevity of the project’s existence. But great things often happen in passing, capturing the sparks of a situation and the enthusiasms of new and unpredictable encounters. For Cummings, being in Washington was “the most fun I’d had in my life up to that point,” and he’s quick to point out the significance of what had happened in the city in recent times: it was a stronghold for creative independent pop music, with bands like Unrest, Velocity Girl, and Glo-worm, and thrilling pop singles being released at a fierce clip by labels like Teenbeat and the early Slumberland Records.

The Shapiros’ music is a particularly seductive kind of blissful pop. The reverberant chime of a guitar, the subtle sweep of brushes on drums, a gently pulsing bass guitar, all perfectly played and placed, frame a beautifully unaffected voice, one that’s understated without being detached. It’s music that understands how small gestures are often the most deeply affecting. And though it may speak quietly at times, it’s strident and strong; clear and direct. They may have only recorded twelve songs and played two gigs (one supporting Lois and The Magnetic Fields, the other Nord Express), but what a body of work to leave behind – diminutive in the best possible way; every second of these twenty-five-or-so minutes of Shapiros magic counts, every moment matters.

<a href="https://theshapiros.bandcamp.com/album/gone-by-fall-the-collected-works-of-the-shapiros">Gone By Fall: The Collected Works of The Shapiros by The Shapiros</a>
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0538/4486/9300/products/the-shapiros-gone-by-fall-the-collected-works-of-the-shapiros-636382.jpg?v=1679398818
nein-rodere-form-feeling
Nein Rodere – Form & Feeling

Horn Of Plenty <O / UK / 2023

Roughly a year on from Catch Up with What Party +, Nein Rodere returns to Horn of Plenty with Form & Feeling, the project’s third outing with the label and first LP of all new material: an immersion into meticulously montaged, irreverent lo-fi song writing, incorporating elements of sampling and musique concrete.

Nein Rodere is the moniker of the Berlin-based music maker and visual artist David Roeder. Having played in bands for more than 20 years - often times making improvised music with other “non-musicians” - Roeder was trained in painting and psychodynamic art therapy. This multifaceted background underpins the complex humour and multiple dimensions of meaning (and double meaning) that bubble below his work. The body of solo efforts that has slowly emerged over the last five years brings to mind the collage-style efforts of Letha Rodman-Melchior, Dean Blunt or Jim Shepard as much as the conceptual excursions into sound forged by visual artists like Anton Heyboer, Henning Christiansen and Jean Dubuffet.

Comprising fifteen “songs” of varied length, Form & Feeling’s title is a riff on the philosopher Susanne Langer’s book Feeling and Form, which interrogates the influences of art on the mind. Deeply influential on his own practice, Roeder explains “In a very simplified way, it's [about] how the unique "form" of an art-piece (of any medium) is supposed to have this quality of "feeling", which means it creates an emotional experience that lies outside of the realm of what can be expressed by factual language or science. Form operates within a symbolic logic of making presentable the structure of inner life - not just one's own but also in a general way."
Faced with the arching potential of symbolic reading and like all of the work created under Nein Rodere, there is a sharp counterpoint between immediate aesthetic impressions - foregrounding happenstance and transience - and the depth of the content, expression and experience that lays at the collective core of Form & Feeling’s fifteen compositions. Each piece is drawing on a clear sense of intentionality, narrative, and responsiveness, accumulating the layered residues of Roeder’s constant process of searching and reworking, in his quest to uncover the off kilter equilibrium of their form.

Falling somewhere between works of conceptual sound art and wild experiments in bedroom songwriting - internalising an inexplicable mix of Leonard Cohen, The Velvet Underground, Don Cherry's Organic Music, post-boarding school Earl Sweatshirt, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Terry Riley et al - as Form & Feeling unfolds, fragments of highly individualised narratives are processed through the lens of psychoanalysis, social anxiety, and mundanity of everyday encounter, cumulating as a trip into the inner workings of a singular creative mind. All this time the lyrical focus oscillates between quotidian detail and almost generalising statements, emphasizing specificity in vagueness and vice versa.

Across its two sides - displaying remarkable versatility and cohesion with the diversity of their approaches - the jangle of unconventionally plucked strings, durational tones, percussive rattles, warped melodies, untraceable samples etc play against the dry delivery of Roeder’s deeply personal poetic sensibility. As such they are saturated with a sense of mood by the ominously present voids of space and further revealed by the raw and exposed means by which they were pointedly laid to tape.

<a href="https://horn-of-plenty.bandcamp.com/album/form-feeling">Form &amp; Feeling by Nein Rodere</a>

Horn Of Plenty <O / UK / 2023

Horn of Plenty casts its gaze into the thriving contemporary Belgian underground with Annelies Monseré’s Mares, a remarkable body of experimental compositions that taps the deep well of raw, emotive expression rumbling below numerous traditions of European folk music.

As a member of Ghent’s experimental music scene, over the past two decades Annelies Monseré has slowly refined a singular approach to musicality, moving from the sparse, instrumental piano works from that defined her early career, toward increasingly complex arrangements of instrumentation that offer a central place to her own voice, issued by noteworthy imprints such as Morc Tapes, Stroom, and three:four. Like her work within the widely celebrated ensemble, Luster, as well as Distels, her duo with Steve Marreyt, Monseré’s solo efforts establish a strikingly beautiful and remarkably unique territory that elegantly balances between rigorous experimentalism, minimalism, drone, and folk.

Recorded between 2016 and 2022, Mares is arguably best approached through the song that marked its inception and conclusion, a rendition of Cyril Tawney’s Sally Free & Easy. Written in 1958 and popularised by Pentangle during the early 1970s, it has been approached by so many artists - Davy Graham, Trees, Tony Caro & John, Marianne Faithfull, Flying Saucer Attack, etc. - that it’s become a “standard” within the folk scenes of the last half century or so. Initially drawn to the melodic qualities of the tune, Monseré became fascinated with the lyrical content, which she points out are “ethically problematic: a sailor ‘slutshaming’ a woman because she left him.. blaming her for his (planned) suicide”. Refined from paired down beginnings over a six year period, a droning, feminist dirge slowly emerged from her hands, incorporating male backing vocals and harmonium as brooding counterpoint to her voice, that entirely recasts the song into a new and radically prescient form.

It is this sense of contrast - the elemental humanity and tension that runs below countless traditions of folk, reconceptualized within the forward thinking temperaments of contemporary experimental music - that defines Mares as such a distinct piece of work. A departure from her previous solo efforts, being the first to leave behind her main instruments, the guitar and piano, the album was conceived by Monseré as something akin to timbral painting; “adding similar layers upon each other with (slightly) different hues”. Taking the image of the sea and the ethical tensions within Sally Free & Easy as a conceptual departure point - weaving these themes like a thread through the record - amongst complex sets of harmonic relationships and varied durational structures that unfold within the remaining seven compositions, she intertwined her own childhood memories of the sea with interrogations of how “these memories are often arbitrarily fixed and tainted by the present, and more metaphorical (even biblical) connotations of the sea, hinting at toxic human relationships and intoxication in its multiple senses.”

Appearing with the immediacy and emotiveness of folk music, imbued with sense of adventure of experimentalism and bred with the restraint and elegance of minimalism, Mares’ is a deep body of sonority that draws upon the fundamental human need to express and commune through sound, projecting this ancient need into forward-thinking forms without sacrificing its roots. Profoundly beautiful, elegant, and poetic, these eight tracks offer immersion into the singular creative voice of one of the most unique artists currently working in the Belgian scene.

&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="https://horn-of-plenty.bandcamp.com/album/mares"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Mares by Annelies Monseré&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;

Tough Love Records / UK / 2023 / White Vinyl

“Upon the highways of Freedom, where Evil is like a Ferrari… “

Unbeknownst to its members, Index For Working Musik was born on an evening in late 2019 amidst the discovery of a collection of faded b&w photocopies that had been marinating on the floor of a urine-alley in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. An assortment of sacred and profane imagery were crumpled amongst an essay on early Christian hermits, entitled Men Possessed by God, the meaning of which was enticingly vague. Received together, they planted the seeds for a new endeavour. Though Max Oscarnold and Nathalia Bruno were already engaged in a creative ping-pong of sorts, the results to this point had only totaled a 30 min long ½ inch tape containing one track and four interludes. They needed a page and they needed ink, and they needed a place and it needed energy. Suddenly by chance or divine intervention, their experimental venture had been given form and direction.

Back home in London’s cursed smog, they moved themselves and their 8-track studio into a basement in E8, where the project’s gravitational pull gained strength, quickly developing into an unexpected collective with the incorporation of drummer Bobby Voltaire, double bass player E. Smith and guitarist J. Loftus. As the world shifted around them and the Plague Years followed, it became increasingly clear that they were not going to leave that small basement room. The scarcity of light or outer world presence was less a limitation, instead the main tool at hand, allowing the recording to stretch for boundaryless days in architectural isolation, and forcing them to make straight forward free guitar music, adopting a ‘first thought, best thought’ approach.

The result of this period became a collection of music they were to name Dragging the Needlework for the Kids at Uphole, to be released via Tough Love on ____. 35 minutes of repeat phrased guitars, slow-clipped drums and dulcet vocals where the recurring landscape is the desert. Reel-to reel-loops of Afghan music compete with the found sound overlays of voices recorded at the queue of the pharmacy and drum machines borrowed from Spanish heroes, channelling both far-off climes and snippets from a closer reality. It’s a strange psychic brew, built of imagined mysticism and domestic realities, of fever dreams and days that stretched into weeks of months.

What was sparked by that discovery in the Gothic Quarter was actually a realisation that what they were looking for was with them all the while, buried as it was in piles of voice memos and recorded guitar feedback. Men Possessed By God they may be not: it was self-possession that was to guide their way in the end.

“Life, despite all its destructive changes, remains indestructibly powerful and joyful.”

&amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="https://indexforworkingmusik.bandcamp.com/album/dragging-the-needlework-for-the-kids-at-uphole"&amp;amp;amp;gt;Dragging the Needlework for The Kids at Uphole by Index for Working Musik&amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;gt;
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0538/4486/9300/products/index-for-working-musik-dragging-the-needlework-for-the-kids-at-uphole-390116.jpg?v=1679398134
library-l-amour-premier-caprice
Library L’Amour – Premier Caprice

Stroom & Kontakt Group / Belgium / 2023

(MINT/ NM) *Minor corner wear.

These tracks were recorded over the course of our 3 and half year relationship.

<a href="https://stroomtv.bandcamp.com/album/premier-caprice">Premier Caprice by Library L'Amour</a>
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0538/4486/9300/products/library-lamour-premier-caprice-696704.jpg?v=1679398207
tony-conrad-arnold-dreyblatt-jim-orourke-tonic-19-01-2001
Tony Conrad, Arnold Dreyblatt, Jim O'Rourke – Tonic 19/01/2001

Black Truffle / Australia / 2023

Celebrating its one hundredth release, Black Truffle is honoured to present a major archival discovery: a stunning document of the only performance by the trio of Tony Conrad, Arnold Dreyblatt and Jim O’Rourke. Across a two-night programme organised by David Weinstein at legendary New York experimental venue Tonic in January 2001, Conrad, Dreyblatt and O’Rourke presented individual projects before performing a collaborative set each night, the first with members of Dreyblatt’s ensemble and the second the trio heard here. As Dreyblatt points out in the wonderfully informative and reflective liner notes written for this release, this was a collaboration across generations, reflecting the profound impact of Conrad’s pioneering minimalism on Dreyblatt and O’Rourke. Both Dreyblatt and O’Rourke came to this collaboration armed with a deep appreciation of Conrad’s music and the just intonation principles at its core, Dreyblatt having first encountered the incredible power of Conrad’s precisely tuned violin chords during his tenure as an archivist for La Monte Young in 1975, while O’Rourke had performed with Conrad in various settings since the mid-1990s (as well as admiring, reissuing, and performing Dreyblatt's music).

The flyer for the concert promised ‘massive, ecstatic, pulsating overtones’, and the trio certainly delivered. From the moment this keening stream of bowed strings begins, it is clear, as Dreyblatt writes, that we are in ‘Tony’s sonic universe’, as massively amplified, slowly shifting combinations of precisely chosen pitches fill the room with complex beating patterns and ghostly difference tones. For more than twenty-five minutes, the music operates at a level of intensity comparable to classic recordings such as Conrad’s Four Violins, until the texture thins out slightly in the performance’s final quarter, allowing for the listener’s first recognition of the individual voices that make up this enormous, overwhelming harmonic edifice. The constant stream of bowed tones is broken by a beautifully rich pizzicato from Conrad on monochord, the sliding low tones and metallic shimmer of the other strings taking the set's final moments on an unexpected detour into spacious pastoral psychedelia.

Though produced by three individuals known for their own distinctive bodies of the work, this is egoless music, the perfect expression of Conrad's desire 'to move away from composing to listening', to 'working "on" the sound from "inside" the sound'. Historically important and overwhelming in sonic impact, this release also serves as a moving tribute to Tony Conrad from two musicians profoundly marked by the example set by his art and life.

<a href="https://blacktruffle.bandcamp.com/album/tonic-19-01-2001">Tonic 19-01-2001 by Tony Conrad / Arnold Dreyblatt / Jim O'Rourke</a>
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0538/4486/9300/products/tony-conrad-arnold-dreyblatt-jim-orourke-tonic-19012001-383608.jpg?v=1679398819
pablo-miron-on-any-one-of-those-notes
Pablo Mirón - On Any One Of Those Notes

Not on Label / Spain / 2023

A sonic essay selected & mixed by Pablo Mirón for Geograficamente Perto aired at LYL Radio 05.09.2019.

Unlocked Youth · Pablo Mirón "On Any One Of Those Notes"

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0538/4486/9300/products/pablo-miron-on-any-one-of-those-notes-616323.jpg?v=1681348921
eyot-tapes-ajor-path-of-snakes
Eyot Tapes - Ajor / Path Of Snakes

Muscut / Ukraine / 2023

Inspired by films he grew up watching and a passion for vintage recording equipment, Eyot Tapes has crafted ten pieces of music recording only to cassettes, using cassette loops, spring reverbs, tape delays and a modular synthesiser. Nikolaienko's album was created as an imaginary theme to a museum exhibition, while Alexander Green sees his compositions as a tropical fantasy, influenced by Tarzan writer and eugenicist Edgar Rice Burroughs. Unsurprisingly, some of the tracks then are a little tongue in cheek (we hope!), with 'Open the Book' and 'Jungle Tapes' sounding particularly close to mid-20th century exotica, but dubbed into wildly fluttered, pitch-fucked psychedelia.

The album really hits its stride in the second half, as the exotica elements are drowned in cavernous reverb or obscured by ramshackle electronics. Flick to 'Lagoon' for a real treat though, a sub-aquatic microtonal feast that's a disorienting and brilliant as Michel Redolfi's "Underwater Music" and as druggy as Phoenecia's "Brownout". Pairing the vocals of Komi Togbonou and Martin Weigel (both actors of Münchner Kammerspiele) and spoken words by Chinese performer Xiangjie with MIDI and live recordings of various instruments like marimba, flutes, reeds as well as various percussion instruments, the Warsaw-based composer highlights the unique tonal and textural potential of the human voice. The title track perhaps illustrates this approach most strikingly, interweaving wordless layers of vocals that ebb and flow with natural grace. “Breathing” follows with a more abrupt, almost jazz-tinged atmosphere, whereas “Ds / The Moss Beneath'' is more orchestral, almost classical in its approach. The centerpiece of the album is the 12-minute opus “Martin Is Crying”, where the interplay between the vocal layers and glockenspiel resembles classic early renaissance music, while adding more range and harmony to the playful tone.

'Peach Blossom' is another theater-adjacent release following Kurek's acclaimed collection 'A Sacrifice Shall Be Made / All The Wicked Scenes' (2020). Sakini ravels together trumpet, flute, harmonica, recorder, vocals, bass, strings and piano to deliver her melancholic and cryptic odes, while Magaletti adds acoustic guitar, Italian spoken word, bongos, bass, and drums, pitched down to match the sunken swag of Sakini.

The project sprung to life after Magaletti, versatile drummer-composer for a myriad projects including Moin, Tomaga, Holy Tongue and CZN, asked Sakini, responsible for a series of plaintive works on A Colourful Storm, Boomkat, Total Stasis, to contribute to an album that quickly developed into a separate project in its own right. The direction of the record unfolds much like the development of a new union/friendship, at times reserved and suggestive - other times bold and assertive, eventually resounding in proud unison - a force greater than one artist could deliver alone. This allowance for alchemy and individual space results in a series of 10 linked movements which sees the pair play with space and intensity: dense, mechanical elements are stretched and softened to form sparse, barely sunlit scenes, with scattered whispers and melodic hints popping out from the rich sonic landscape that comprises of 20 odd instruments, recorded in a variety of settings across London.

The restraint of instrumentation in Cupo defines the moods as much as the palette: thick, industrial street scenes with menacing panned trumpets and metallic percussion that sounds like cars, traffic, glass and danger is ameliorated by carefree harmonica, soft cymbals, honkytonk piano and acoustic guitar that speaks of tumbleweed, easy times and air. In these drawings the artist puts himself in many tragic situations. Like vomiting on his way home after a long night at the bar. Boiling right wing idiots. Telling sweet little lies on your Tinder profile. Or, you know, taking out the garbage on a Sunday evening. The horror. These seemingly hermetic pencil drawings show a deceivingly simple world. Instead of a clear picture, we now have the feeling of looking at a bunch of different doodles. Like... sometimes I have the feeling compared to how focussed Dennis works on his drawings, how unfocussed and sketchy he treats his music. We are simply thrown from emotion to emotion. From laughter to tears. It’s a bumpy ride.

I’d like to imagine that Dennis constantly notates all the shards of conversation he picks up during his regular walks in the centre of Antwerp - a wormhole congested with characters, the one more tragic than the other. In a kind of R. Murray Schafer way, Dennis takes in every sentence very un-arbitrary... and that’s the soundscape. Dramatic, normal, boasted, silly, urgent...

Enter Jeroen Stevens. Antwerp’s number one percussionist. If I would have to list all the bands he performs in this text, well, we would be truly wasting data and printers. Jeroen is the grand gift of the well- schooled session musician. But thank the heavens of white improv, he is also sweet and creative. Jeugdbrand is his second entry in the Edições CN catalogue, after taking care of some of the percussive fragments on the “KAGIROI" LP with Sugai Ken (2021).

Recently Jeroen has been performing very lengthy - thus correct - performances of Satie’s Vexations for midi instrumentation; Christmas music; and his famed De Stoeltjes project, where he covers Stooges songs on a camping chair. Apparently much to the confusion of Iggy himself. This might all feel like a big joke to you, but when you dare to listen, you will have to admit that Steven’s adventurous music is very rewarding. Special stuff.

The music of Jeugdbrand reminds me a bit of the music of the late Ghédalia Tazartès - especially when it comes to reinterpreting and combining musical idioms - but trying to put a direct reference on this album does it a bit short. Most important, this is music how it could be: incomprehensible, hilarious, serious, ludicrous, well crafted, sloppy, non-genre. With a strong sense of personality. Cunningham, then a student at the Maidstone College of Art in Kent, drafted fellow student non-musicians and (using whatever instruments available) crafted an endlessly shifting sonic palette with an improvisor's keen sensitivity to space, texture and tone.

As Cunningham states in the liner notes, his approach was to "pursue something (which may appear trivial or meaningless) so rigorously or relentlessly to the point that it reveals something new."

Cunningham was influenced by live performances he was attending at the time by English composers Cornelius Cardew, Gavin Bryars and Michael Nyman as well as free improvisors Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, David Toop and Paul Burwell.

The inaugural release on Cunningham's own Piano label, Grey Scale was indeed "something new" in 1976. In Sphæra, Daniel Teruggi precisely addresses this question, transcending matter with the help of novel digital audio techniques so as to draw out forms, trajectories, layers, and musical objects, all of which result from the merging or sublimation of primordial sounds. Indeed, this is where Daniel Teruggi’s music and compositional approach stand out: by engaging sounds, with strength, will and inspiration, in a close encounter with energies, whether tectonic or electrical. Such collisions, such metamorphoses, are then appeased in the whole space of the composition, a fascinating landscape, the final destination of all transmutations.

François Bonnet, Paris, 2021

<a href="https://danielteruggi.bandcamp.com/album/sph-ra">Sphæra by Daniel Teruggi</a>

1972 / US / 2023 / LP, Pink

Following a run with Cherry Red Records that featured a potential major label jump, guitarist Maurice Deebank quitting and rejoining multiple times, several pop stardom carrots just out of reach, mixing battles with Robin Guthrie, and a shocking entry into the record charts, Lawrence (just “Lawrence”, like “Cher” or “Madonna” thank you very much) knew he would be making a change with his band Felt. He would be seeing out his plan of ten albums and ten singles in ten years alongside a new partner in Creation Records. This compilation beautifully captures those years.

Creation was beginning a rapid ascent at the time, with Alan McGee serving as its hyperactive mouthpiece and focal point. McGee was all in on the band. “Lawrence achieved pop perfection, a breathless rush of sensitivity and intelligence. It was too understated to be commercial, too art to go pop, too pop to go art - in other words it was a perfect combination of all the music I loved at the time”. McGee was thrilled to have what he considered a real star on the label, and Lawrence was equally thrilled to have such an enthusiastic cheerleader. He funneled that enthusiasm into some of the most focused songwriting of his career, as well as some of his wildest experiments, all of which are on display here.

With Deebank officially departed, young Martin Duffy quickly assumed the role of songwriting foil, and his keyboard and organ work heavily colored these years in the best way possible. The compilation kicks off with Duffy’s 60s swirls racing against time in the most “Felt” titled tune ever, “I Will Die With My Head In Flames”. These years would see so many tight little 2:30 gems, as Lawrence became even more prolific. Ballads like “I Didn’t Mean To Hurt You” and the contemplative “The Final Resting Of The Ark” nestle up against the pop burst of “Sandman’s On The Rise Again” and the gorgeous shuffle of “Rain Of Crystal Spires” and total rock and roll perfection of “Ballad Of The Band”.

Duffy had become such a huge part of the band, and the Creation family, that he would be the cover star of Forever Breathes The Lonely Word and Felt would release records of only his material. His solo turns here, like “Autumn” and in particular “Magellan” showcase what a special talent he truly was. His influence created a Felt that could be equal parts Verlaine, Dylan, and Reed as well as Love and The Monkees, but it also stretched it into unknown territories. All of that coalesced into what would be the tenth and final single for the band, a song driven by Duffy’s R&B Fender Rhodes and Francis Sweeney’s violin, “Space Blues” features the perfect longing line for this era of Felt. Stars in their own orbit, yet yearning for an entirely different solar system.

“I’m your greatest fan, ‘cause you don’t give a damn”.

1972 / US / 2023 / LP, Brown

Lawrence Hayward knew that he wanted to be a pop star as a teen, and he devised a plan to release ten albums and ten singles over ten years to make that dream come true. A particular and determined individual, he would only be known as Lawrence from that day forward. His hopes for stardom would be pinned on his newly formed band, the succinctly named Felt. Soon signed to Cherry Red Records, Lawrence’s achingly cool vocals and the group’s way with walking melodies were evident on their debut for the label, “Something Sends Me To Sleep”. This compilation collects material from Felt’s Cherry Red period of 1981 to 1985, kicking off with that confident start, assembling numerous high points, and closing with their biggest hit, “Primitive Painters”.

This phase of the band is defined by the songwriting partnership and unique interplay of Lawrence and guitarist Maurice Deebank, with Deebank’s stylish and confident playing the envy of many of their counterparts. He delivers a constant string of shimmering hooks that wrap themselves around and over top of Lawrence’s more traditional beat combo song structures, as if trying to fit four songs worth of ideas into a pre-set radio friendly cutoff time. It works wonderfully as Lawrence always counters with a solid bedrock.

In one of many brushes with the brass ring, in 1984 Felt recorded versions of “Dismantled King Is Off The Throne” and “Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow”, for the newly formed and Warners-backed label Blanco y Negro, in hopes that the band would follow their A+R man Mike Alway to the executive suite. Despite putting forward two of their finest songs, it was not to be. While major label dreams had to remain on the shelf, fans were delighted to be able to hear these beautifully stripped down and more direct versions when this compilation was released a few years later.

By 1985 the Felt roller coaster was something Maurice Deebank was constantly getting on and off of. As Gary Ainge always kept the beat, and Lawrence never lost focus, they were joined by local teen prodigy Martin Duffy on keyboards, filling out the arrangements, and following Deebank’s racing six-string cascades in “The Day The Rain Came Down” you can even hear a tiny hint of the next phase of the band in Duffy’s organ before Maurice swoops to the finish. The newly expanded Felt would then put everything they had into making one of the defining releases of the 80s: “Primitive Painters”.

After being certain that they would burst into the mainstream with a tight 2:30 pop song, Felt would instead crash the charts with a six minute atmospheric build that somehow highlighted all of their strengths while being a wildly unique release. Based around a Deebank swirl, Marco Thomas’ meandering bass, Ainge’s repeated drum surges, and Duffy’s organ push, the song starts, but never actually stops. The instantly recognizable vocals of Cocteau Twins Liz Fraser feel right at home, as her husband at the time, Robin Guthrie, mans the producer’s chair. However, it is Lawrence’s rhythmic delivery that not only makes it 1000% Felt, but also drives everything. Like a street savvy Lou Reed trying to convince passing kids to forsake drugs and alcohol and embrace art galleries as the cool new hangout, it is everything Felt hoped to be.

Hands In The Dark / Switzerland / 2023

Staran Wake is a collaborative project by Andrew Bunsell and Tom Relleen.
