Originally released in 1980 on Ralph Records (San Francisco), Commercial Album remains one of the most brilliant subversions of pop music history. The concept is as sharp as it is satirical: 40 tracks, each lasting exactly one minute, mirroring the structure of radio advertisements and Top 40 jingles.
The Residents famously argued that most pop songs are simply a one-minute idea repeated three times; by providing only the "essence," they challenged the listener to engage with the music without the filler. Featuring guest contributions from Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, and Andy Partridge (XTC), the album is a breathless collage of avant-garde synth-pop, haunting melodies, and surrealist humor.
An essential cornerstone of the 1980s post-punk and experimental scene, proving that even a minute is enough to create a masterpiece.
