"Desafinado," meaning "off key," was one of the pioneering tracks to introduce Bossa Nova—a Brazilian jazz style—to North American audiences, with its breezy rhythms and light, syncopated melody becoming iconic in late ‘50s and early ‘60s jazz-pop. Guitarist Charlie Byrd encountered the Samba style on a trip to Brazil and brought it to saxophonist Stan Getz, leading to the 1962 release of "Desafinado." The track became a Top 20 hit and won a Grammy, sparking Getz's further collaboration with João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Their work, especially on the Getz/Gilberto album, elevated "Desafinado" with Gilberto's intimate vocals and the interplay of guitar, piano, and Getz's smooth tenor sax, giving the song a romantic Brazilian allure. "Desafinado" has since been widely covered by artists across genres, from R&B groups like The Drifters to jazz icons like Dizzy Gillespie and violinist Stéphane Grappelli, solidifying its influence on jazz and pop music.
