Ragas & Talas, originally released in 1959, is one of Ravi Shankar's earliest LPs and has been reissued. Known for its hypnotic quality, this album showcases Shankar, one of the most renowned sitar players of the 20th century. Shankar began touring Europe and the Americas in 1956, popularizing Indian classical music, especially through his connections with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and The Beatles' George Harrison. He recorded his first LP, Three Ragas, in 1956, with Chatur Lal on tabla, before Alla Rakha took over in 1962. Many of his recordings from the 1950s and 1960s were released on Richard Bock’s World Pacific Records.
