San Francisco punk band the Nuns are often remembered mainly for launching Alejandro Escovedo’s career, but they had a distinct identity in the late-’70s punk scene. Fronted by three vocalists, the standout was Jennifer Miro, whose cool vocals and icy keyboards defined much of their sound. Tracks like Suicide Child and Walkin’ the Beat showcased her melodic sensibilities, while guitarist Pat Ryan brought raw energy to heavier tracks like Media Control and World War III. The album explored dark themes, from personal turmoil to societal critiques, with Miro’s charisma shining through, particularly on the piano-driven ballad Lazy. Though their sound was eclectic, the Nuns left behind a minor punk classic worth revisiting.
